This is a fabulous and brand new satellite image of the Vestfirdir Peninsula ("the western fjords") in NW Iceland, showing once again how streaming ice flowing within outlet glacier troughs tends to eliminate interfluves and spurs, leading to a simplified dendritic pattern dominated by the major ice routeways........... This pattern has probably evolved over many different glacial episodes.

Faroe Islands -- and a miniature brutalised dendritic drainage pattern
I'm intrigued by the "brutalised" dendritic drainage patterns that we find in glaciated areas which have been subjected to the intense streamflow of large outlet glaciers during some episodes of the Ice Age. These patterns exist where so much flow is concentrated in the main channels that the delicate bits and pieces of the original dendritic river drainage pattern (in other words the smaller tributaries) are simply chopped off. Interfluves or spurs are shortened, and the pattern is greatly simplified. We can see this in the annotated satellite image above.
In the Faroes almost all of the remaining drainage routes are directed southwards and south-eastwards. So the main watershed runs very close to, or actually at, the position of this outer coastline. This is where there are many cliffs over a thousand feet high. There are a few northward-flowing trough or valley remnants, as we can see on the image, but by and large there has been so much coastal erosion from the west and north that the original landmass of "trap" or horizontal lava flows has been chopped in half.
So there has been intense glacial activity here during pre-Devensian glacial episodes. These have not, as far as I am aware, been carefully studied in the archipelago.
The other very intriguing thing about these islands is that these "brutalised" patterns and streamlined troughs are really rather small. The fjords are seldom more than 4 km wide, and more than 20 km long. The flanking uplands (on the interfluves) are seldom over 400m high. (The highest peaks lie over 800m asl.) So these are really miniature fjords or troughs when set alongside those of Norway, Greenland and Arctic Canada.
It is also interesting that if the above map of Devensian glaciation and iceflow directions is correct (I think it comes from a Norwegian research group) then the old trough pattern seems to have had relatively little influence on glacier behaviour around 20,000 years ago. Indeed, in some places the ice appears to have flowed ACROSS the old troughs rather than along them. More work is needed on this.
The most spectacular feature of the glaciated landscape as we see it today is the superabundance of cirques and cirque remnants, some of them with basin floors less than 200m above se-level. How many generations of cirques are there? Quite possibly several, although there is a preferential orientation of north and north-east -- as we would expect with winds (and snowdrift) from the W and SW, and heavier shading on the N, E and NE flanks of the upland ridges.

Cape Enniberg, at the northernmost tip of the archipelago. At 754m high, this is the highest sea cliff in Europe and maybe in the world, depending on how one interprets the mix of natural processes involved in cliff creation! Anyway, to the left there was once a substantial landmass,
now removed by the sea........
Just to get some sort of scale here, the top edge of the Enniberg cliff lies at a far greater altitude than the highest point on Mynydd Preseli (536m).

Glaciation of the Faroe Islands
Few details are known from the glacial history of theFaroe Islands (Fig. 2a). Nevertheless, pioneering work by Helland (1879) demonstrated that the Faroes once were glaciated. During the Weichselian glaciation the ice cap covered the islands up to at least 700 m above sea level, and extended onto the shelf well beyond the present coastline (Jørgensen and Rasmussen, 1986). The latter authors also concluded that during the Quaternary the Faroe Islands were repeatedly covered by a local ice cap. No foreign erratics have been found, and glacial striations show a radiating pattern from the larger islands. Radiocarbon dating and pollen stratigraphy indicate that glaciers may have been present in the larger valleys until the beginning of the Holocene (Johansen, 1975; Johansen, 1985). Marine geological studies suggest offshore grounding of the Faroe Islands ice cap down to present water depths of at least 400 m (Waagstein and Rasmussen, 1975). Around the Faroe Islands evidence of glacial reworking of sea bed sediments has been found down to water depths of around 750 m (Kuijpers et al., 1998), whereas seismic sections fromthe northern slope of the Faroe Platform display evidence of glacial reworking of sediments in water depths of up to 900 m (Nielsen and van Weering, 1998). In addition, on the Iceland-Faroe Ridge (Fig. 2a) isolated iceberg ploughmarks are observed down to 960 m water depth (Kuijpers et al.,1998).

Clifftop till at Penycwm
Thanks to Dan Soper for publishing this one on the Pembs Geology Facebook page -- a "stack" of clifftop till at Penycwm, north of Newgale. It's gradually being whittled away by erosion.
The boulders at the base of the stack appear to rest on brecciated bedrock / slope deposits. I'm not sure of the significance of the change of colour between the lower part of the till stack and the upper layer -- I need to get over there to have a look......
Almost certainly this till is of Late Devensian age.

Faroe Islands landscapes
A gallery of extraordinary images from the Faroe Islands. The islands are essentially a series of elongated ridges partly submerged and -- on the northern and western coasts -- carved up by extreme coastal erosion. The results are spectacular with many cliffs over 1500 ft high -- but one of the reasons why Faroese landscapes are so impressive is the presence of glacial cirques in abundance at very low altitude. Preseli -- where are all the stone rows?

I have been intrigued for some time by the lack of stone rows in Preseli or North Pembrokeshire, given the assumptions that this must have been some sort of "special place" worthy of attention by the builders of Stonehenge. (Assumptions which you, dear reader, will know that I do not share......)
They exist in apparent profusion on Dartmoor and indeed in other parts of Wales, but in North Pembrokeshire there are only three recorded -- all of them very dubious.

On the fascinating web site called "The Stone Rows of Great Britain" there is reference to stone rows at Parc y Meirw, Troed y Rhiw and Penmeiddyn.

Parc y Meirw, which I have described earlier, is deemed to have been 911 m long, but that is in my view a piece orf rather wild speculation for which there is virtually no supporting evidence. All we know is that there are four rather standing stones in a hedge, with two of them functioning as gate posts in the past. They are certainly impressive, if you can see them through the brambles, gorse and
hawthorns. SM 99858 35935
Citation: A single stone row measuring at least 911m long, including at least eight large-sized orthostats situated on south and west facing slopes. Unequal spacing indicates that it is very likely that many more have been removed. The row is orientated ESE to WNW, has both sea and landscape
reveals and may even have once extended further eastward. Traditionally the row has been seen as consisting of the four western stones which are set relatively close together.
Troed y Rhiw has also disappeared without trace, having been made of very small stones presumably simply moved away during field clearance work. SN 08792 35756
Citation: A possible single stone row only known from a description in the Royal Commission Inventory. The row which has since been destroyed measured 12.2m long and consisted of 24 contiguous, edge set stones with an average height of 0.60m leading from a stone circle formed by at least 12 stones. The row was situated on a west facing slope, was orientated east to west and stood in the vicinity of a stone pair and standing stone.
Penmeiddyn, not far from Manorowen, is also recorded but now entirely destroyed. SM9241535584
Citation: A probable single stone row (possibly double in places) only known from a description in the Royal Commission Inventory. The row which has since been destroyed measured 79m long and consisted of about 54 stones. The four westernmost stones were about 1m high and others were much smaller with many just protruding through the surface. The row was situated on a south west facing slope, was orientated north east to south west and stood in the vicinity of standing stones and
barrows.
Nothing much to be excited about here. There are no other stone rows within 30 miles, and the destroyed rows at Mynydd Llanybyther (SN549395) and Bancbryn (SN68936 10326) are not much to write home about either -- although the latter (discovered in 2012) is described thus: A single stone row measuring 717m long, including at least 173 mainly small stones situated on a south facing slope with sea and landscape visual links and reveals. The row leads from a small cairn, terminates at the largest stone, is orientated north east to south west and stands between two cairn cemeteries. The visual links with Hartland Point and Exmoor are noteworthy. Excavation failed to provide a date but confirmed a lack of historic activity.

I am unconvinced that any of these is a genuine long "ceremonial" or "ritual" stone row like those of Dartmoor, and to me they look like Bronze Age or later field boundaries similar to those in the vicinity of Carn Alw on Mynydd Preseli.
So why was there no apparent interest in the creation of long stone rows in the Preseli landscape, given that there were abundant boulders littering the landscape? Does that indicate a cultural preference, or a sparse and not very technically advanced local population?

Mynydd Preseli Historic Landscape
Not sure if I have reproduced this map before -- thanks to Dyfed Archaeology, HMSO and Cadw. The map shows the extent of the Mynydd Preseli Historic Landscape -- the black line defines the area. Some interesting areas are excluded -- presumably because agriculture or forestry are deemed to have damaged the historic landscape features. Sorry the quality is not very good. Because this area is characterised or identified accurately, it is afforded a degree of protection. It all lies within the National Park.
