Ailsa Craig -- where all those erratics came from

Lovely photo of Ailsa Craig in the winter.  There is more of it under the water, of course -- but it's nice to remind ourselves now and then that this is the source of many thousands of small (and very characteristic) white microgranite erratics found around the shores of the Irish Sea and St Georges Channel.

"Ailsa Craig" is the origin of the name for the renowned Ailsa Craig tomato, named by nurseryman Alan Balch based in Girvan in South Ayrshire ( Ailsa Craig is visible from there). I enjoyed seeing the splendid Ailsa Craig island from the south coast of the Island of Arran in the 1960s.

Happy Christmas Brian & Inger!
