With the little publishing firm Pembrokeshire Handbooks shutting up shop, and with all copies sold, my little booklet called "The Rocks" will no longer be available from bookshops, information centres etc. It was first published in 1973 -- so it has been on sale for just about 50 years. Not many books and booklets last that long! It has been through many editions, with minor design changes, but the publishers were reluctant to allow me to change the text in spite of the many changes to nomenclature and bedrock dating that have occurred over the years. They thought that too many changes would mean the re-setting of the text and the redesign of the whole booklet -- and they were probably reluctant to spend the money........
But it was a handy little book with a simple text, nice illustrations (but no colour) and an appendix of interesting localities. There was also a glossary of common geological terms and a reference list -- very out of date! It sold well over the years since it was pocket-sized and CHEAP. Originally it cost 50p, and the 1979 reprint cost 75p. Happy days.......
My copy is dated 1993 and has a picture of the rock (Gosker?) on Tenby beach and has a cover price of £1.95.
ReplyDeleteSo on the bright side, it might be a rare and valuable book in a few years time then!
