Carn Ffoi defended enclosure

Above are a couple more images of the Carn Ffoi defended enclosure or fortified site -- located not far from Newport, on the road to Bedd Morris.  It's referred to on the Coflein web site as "sub-rectangular" -- but we can see from the vertical satellite image that it is clearly elliptical, with a well defined defensive embankment made of collected stones.  The entrance appears to be on the western flank, just south of the lower of the two crags.

Not a lot is known about this site, and although it is assumed to have contained a "settlement" of some sort, there are no obvious traces of hut circles such as those within the confines of the hillforts at Carn Ingli and Foel Drygarn.  It's assumed that the embankments were built in the Iron Age -- but they may be older.

  1. Interesting. Never been there or never noticed. How big is it?

  2. A favourite site of mine, and the field systems to the south.

  3. About 90m x 50m, Chris. Agree that those stone walls on the common are amazing -- two big "funnels" designed to get animals off the common and into places where they could be checked, shorn, marked or slaughtered......... very interesting features thereabouts......
