This is an inspired shot of some of the Stonehenge sarsens, as you have probably never seen them before. To me, they look like some of the famous stone heads and hats of Easter Island....... I bet somebody is working on a theory that some of the builders of Stonehenge set off on a great ocen-crossing expedition and settled on Easter Island --- or vice versa.
.... and grateful thanks to Neil Wiseman for sending this pic. Quite wonderful! What we see is very clearly an army of petrified trolls, on the warpath, marching towards us. Be very afraid!

Yes, quite a few of our highly imaginative heroes of the Mike Parker Pearson Persuasion have been to Easter Island, e.g. Colin Richards. They probably say it IS insane to even claim there is a link with Stonehenge, but, hey! let's assume they DID do it, and work up a preposterous theory.......
ReplyDeleteHow did you get this second picture, Neil? They have me quivering in my boots!

Hi Tony,
ReplyDeleteTwo other avowed StoneHeads and myself had walked all the way up the Avenue from Stonehenge Bottom, approaching the stones much like the ancients did. The fence at the top is just a few short yards from the Heelstone so I was able to get some lovely shots. Using the trusty Nikon D-4 with a 105 prime lens ensured that any crops could be very tight while still retaining excellent resolution.
The original shot includes a wider view of the stones from S-30 over to S-23 on the far left. It was an all together rainy and blustery afternoon so the texture and contrast of the stones was exceptional -- not to mention the low, racing overhead squall was straight out of a John Constable painting. I got very lucky in those brief minutes, and there are several others in this set I think are also pretty good.
This one's gonna be the cover of my forthcoming book.
Best,
Neil
