Boyabreen Glacier Retreat 1997-2019


Boyabreen is one of the most familiar glaciers in Norway, since it is located right at the roadside, near the entrance to the road tunnel that runs under the plateau ice cap of Jostedalsbreen.  I can remember a time when there was no rock bar exposed halfway down the rocky slope; but by 1997 the glacier has split into two segments -- and the lower segment was transformed into a "regenerated glacier" like that of Supphellebreen in the adjacent valley.

Now, as we can see from the 2019 photo on the right, that lower section has melted away completely.
