How much do we know about Stonehenge? Less than we think. And what has Stonehenge got to do with the Ice Age? More than we might think. This blog is mostly devoted to the problems of where the Stonehenge bluestones came from, and how they got from their source areas to the monument. Now and then I will muse on related Stonehenge topics which have an Ice Age dimension...
Oh, I'm very relaxed. No quarry, but quite a mess left by people who should have known better, and some nice huts down at the base of the crags, on the north side....
It's not half as bad as the mess at Rhosyfelin -- just a general mess of turfs and stones thrown back into a pit (two pits, I think) in rather a hurry, and bits of broken rock lying about here and there up on the crags.
Carn Goeddog is my favourite place in Preseli, so peaceful and serene and a great place to explore . It is almost like a time capsule from the outcrops northward and I hope it is all left alone , especially after seeing the "mess" or *cough*, "Operation lets-make-this-look-like-a-quarry-from-an-outcrop" as what has happened in Rhos Y Felyn .
Most of the craggy area is in pristine condition, but I suspect it won't be long before they start digging in the "village" since there will be pressure to prove that is where the quarrymen lived!!
Possibly. If there really were a quarry in Preseli, it would signal that something else special existed at that location. If this were the case, the extension of the search could potentially destroy the reason for the quarry's existence. A destructive search of that type might discard important things, just like Hawley's unfortunate trawl through the soils of Stonehenge.
If this area does not contain a Stonehenge quarry, there is little need to have done the investigation.
Both of these are good arguments for limiting the type of work done in the future: Even if positive things are found, a moratorium would prevent the possibility of another Hawley type of event.
What about this Proto - Prime Minister Eddie (Eddy? - geomorphological pun?) Miliband with his plan to erect a Socialist Orthostat in his back garden at Number Ten, on which will be inscribed all his pre - Election Promises, so's we can all be assured (?) he and his Party are keeping them all through his Five Year Incumbency? Election Stunt similar to a MPP Rhosyfelin Declaration of Discovery? As usual, Time will tell.
Brian, is your fourth photograph from the top essentially the same view as we see displayed on your "Bluestone Enigma: Stonehenge, Preseli and the Ice Age" (2008) book?
And a quarry.

Sorry could not resist the temptation to raise your blood pressure.

ReplyDeleteI hope they don't touch this area. What sort of mess is being left Brian?

ReplyDeleteAh do I detect nascent proto-archyNIMBYism.
ReplyDeleteA whiffette.

Crikey! Am I a proto-archyNIMBYist? Been called many things in my time, but that's a new one for me. Should I be pleased?
ReplyDeleteLook at them sat there, all ready for picking, packing and shipping. Go dawg, go.
ReplyDeleteIt was a PYO site, it's obvious..
Of course. It was an orthostat supermarket, run by Dai Orthostat and his family over many generations. Nice little earner......
ReplyDeleteWhat is PYO?
ReplyDeleteIn 2012/3 Dr Ixer' s wife described CRyf as IKEA.

Hazard a guess -- pick your own?
ReplyDeleteCorrect!
