How much do we know about Stonehenge? Less than we think. And what has Stonehenge got to do with the Ice Age? More than we might think. This blog is mostly devoted to the problems of where the Stonehenge bluestones came from, and how they got from their source areas to the monument. Now and then I will muse on related Stonehenge topics which have an Ice Age dimension...

So it's Goodbye to English Heritage
So here we go -- in the latest of the Government's cost-cutting exercises, EH is to be done away with in 2015. There is a lot of guff about increased spending and support in the press release, but the bottom line is that EH has to turn itself into a charity, and become self-financing -- and fast.

What will be the impact on Stonehenge and the other properties looked after by EH? Difficult to say -- except that charities are having a very rough time just now, and a big new one like EH will really have to struggle for funds in a market place where there is less and less money available.
apparently Everyone at Stonehenge is getting replaced.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to arrange special access for some night filming and no one has got back to me which is very unusual/

Brian,
ReplyDeleteThis news is very shocking and enigmatic. Just like Stonehenge and the bluestones.
If austerity measures are needed why not cut back funding rather than cut off ties? I am sure the British people will overwhelmingly continue supporting EH one way or another. The only difference is their Government will now not have anything to say or do with EH and its future activities.
Strange! Opens the door to all sorts of enterprising ventures and misadventures! With no accountability to the country. But only to the money bags behind the scenes.

Looks to me as if the section of English Heritage that deals with the maintenance of monuments are just being turned into a version of the National Trust.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see how it all develops. From reading the documents, it sounds as if the advisory section is being renamed. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.
Oh good, perhaps we'll get that shed back that rented out the hammers so we all can take a sample home again.
ReplyDeleteGolly gosh! will make yet another 'Stonehenge layer' for the ice cube pushers?
Lets be real, it's now no longer a 'national treasure' but will become a private money spinner (disguised as a charity). Anyone for a 'rock' concert? Looking at the number of burger stalls on Solstice day, its just a question of time. And Brian can forget placing Stonehenge pictures on this blog site, have you not heard of image rights?
Mick would be turning in his grave!
