How much do we know about Stonehenge? Less than we think. And what has Stonehenge got to do with the Ice Age? More than we might think. This blog is mostly devoted to the problems of where the Stonehenge bluestones came from, and how they got from their source areas to the monument. Now and then I will muse on related Stonehenge topics which have an Ice Age dimension...

And now for something completely different......
Fred Flintstone (or whoever it was) obviously didn't know his bluestones from his sarsens, but never mind.......
Has anybody asked why all the Stonehenge sarsens are erected with the width running along the circumference of the circle? This makes some of the lintel stones unfit and not well placed (check for example the inner horseshoe circle with the tallest sarsen providing the narrowest top for a lintel stone to sit on). Even this cute cartoon depicts this unsound building technique.
I ask, if these stones were erected in place by men, wont sound building design lead them to erect these so that the lintel stones rest more properly on them? And if these stones were quarried by men, wont their dimensions be made to match their function? Certainly it would not take any greater effort or skill to 'do it right' !!!
